Braces for children
As I said, there are a number of benefits to using private auspices when your child is going to have dental care. When your child goes to primary school, they usually have a school dentist they go to if they have problems with their teeth, or for a regular check-up, to see if everything is as it should be. If your child is told that they need braces to straighten their teeth, they will be offered a regular palate brace or rail.
Many children actually find having to wear braces quite exciting, where others don't feel like it at all. It is therefore important to listen to the needs of your child, but still remember that the sooner you start with the dental direction, the better. We are specialist dentists and can step in immediately and help get the treatment started, so you don't have to wait until it's your time at the school dentist.
Palate brace for children
A palate brace is used to expand the palate of the upper jaw in children. This is necessary when there is a missing space in the mouth, which can lead to crowding of the teeth or other bite problems. The cleft palate can also be used to correct cross-bite, in which the upper teeth bite into the lower teeth.
The palate brace typically consists of two halves, which are connected by a screw in the middle, which can be slowly rotated to extend the brace. This puts mild pressure on the teeth on either side of the upper jaw, which promotes bone growth between the two halves of the jaw, so that the width of the upper jaw gradually increases.
Treatment usually starts at an age when the child's jaw is still developing, typically between the ages of 8 and 14. When you get a palate brace, there will be some instructions on how to adjust the screw in a certain “rhythm”. It is often a small adjustment of the screw every other day, but this can be found out together with our specialist dentist.
Traditional braces for children
Train rails is a fixed dental brace consisting of metal locks, wires and elastic bands that work together to straighten teeth and correct the bite. There is a metal lock, which is attached to each tooth, with a special glue.
In addition, there is a metal wire that goes through all these little metal locks, which sit on each tooth. These need to be adjusted regularly to give the best result. Elastic bands are used to correct the way the upper and lower jaw meet, this is not always necessary.
When your child needs to wear train rails, it's typically when they reach the age of 12-13. It is difficult to say how long your child will have to wear train rails if this is the right course of treatment.
There are a lot of factors, such as the position of the teeth and the desired end goal, that come into play. It is usually said that it is a course of 1-3 years, but you will find out after you start treatment and how your child responds to the treatment.
